Rankings still matter, but the way people find businesses has changed. Here is how to plan SEO that serves Google and AI assistants at the same time.
Start with demand, not keywords
Group searches by the problem the searcher is trying to solve and the stage they are at. One page should own each intent. If two pages compete for the same intent, merge them.
Fix what stops pages being used
Before writing anything new, make sure your existing pages are indexed, fast and clearly structured. AI Overviews and AI search tools draw from the same index, so technical issues cost you twice.
Write pages that can be quoted
Put a direct answer near the top of each page, then add depth: process, pricing guidance, comparisons and evidence. Short, factual statements are easier for both snippets and AI tools to reuse.
Build authority you can point to
Reviews, expert authors, original data and mentions on respected sites are what both Google and language models use to decide who to trust.
Measure beyond rankings
Track leads and revenue from organic search, plus AI referral traffic and your share of mentions across a fixed set of AI prompts.
